FRV flow meter for diesel boilers
Using an FRV turbine flow meter for a diesel boiler is the "correct usage," and it's considered standard equipment for boiler fuel metering. I've compiled this into a practical guide for your reference, making it easier to use on-site.
FRV turbine flow meter for diesel boilersIt is the "correct usage," and it is used in boiler fuel metering. One of the standard configurationsI'll organize it for you.Practical orientationIt works quite well on-site.
Why are FRV turbine flow meters suitable for diesel boilers?

Diesel fuel = clean, low-viscosity liquid

FRV turbine flow meter characteristics
- High precision (common ±0.5% to ±1%)
- Fast response, suitable for combustion control
- Simple structure, stable and durable
- The price is much more affordable than the quality-oriented (Coriolis) brand.
👉 So in:
- Diesel boiler
- Heavy oil boiler (viscosity needs to be considered)
- Burner fuel supply pipe
Very common
Common configurations of diesel boilers (key points)

1️⃣ Installation location
- Burner front end
- Usually in:
- Diesel pump → Filter → FRV turbine flow meter → Burner
⚠️ Important:
- A filter is essential.(80~100 mesh)
- Avoid impurities damaging the leaves
2️⃣ Piping conditions (extremely important)
- Upstream straight pipe section:≥ 10D
- Rear straight pipe section:≥ 5D
- avoid:
- Immediately following the bend
- Immediately following the pressure regulating valve
- Immediately following the solenoid valve
👉 Otherwise the accuracy will be inconsistent 😅
3️⃣ Signals and Control
Common FRV outputs:
- Pulse (N pulse/L) → Most common
- 4–20 mA (optional)
- Some can be equipped with Modbus RTU.
Common uses of boiler systems
- Instantaneous fuel consumption
- Cumulative fuel consumption
- Boiler efficiency calculation
- Energy Management System (EMS / BMS)
FRV is a common boiler brand in Taiwan.
🇹🇼 Taiwan / Commonly seen in Taiwan
- FRV (First General Technology) 👉 Many boiler projects specify
- Hontai
- Jing Han
- Yihao (primarily for water use, but also has fuel-powered applications)
🇯🇵/🇪🇺 (High-end)
- OVAL (Japan)
- KROHNE
- Endress + Hauser (rarely uses turbochargers, high price)
Key Points for Selecting FRV Specifications for Diesel Boilers
If you need to write specifications or review drawings, you'll usually need to refer to the following: 👇
- Fluid: Diesel fuel (DIN / CNS)
- Pipe diameter: DN15 ~ DN50 is the most common.
- Flow range: converted according to boiler kcal/h
- Accuracy: within ±1%
- Temperature: ≤ 80°C
- Pressure: ≥ 10 bar
- Output: Pulse + 4–20mA (Bonus points)
Common minefields on site (must be avoided)
⚠️ No filter installed
⚠️ There is a pressure regulating valve before the flow meter.
⚠️ The return oil pipe was not properly installed (bidirectional flow)
⚠️ Long-term operation at low flow rates (below the lower limit of measurement)
👉 These will all cause:
- Rotor wear
- Inaccurate data usage
- Unstable boiler combustion
